Lucent teams with WASP to deliver Mobile Telecommunications with a Sting Unique partnership breaks 45-second connection hurdle

Dublin, Ireland, Thursday, November 9, 2000

Lucent Technologies has teamed up with wireless mobile expert, WASP Technologies, to deliver the first mobile technology platform with a fast 10 second or less connection to the network. Using the Palm Computing Platform as the front-end delivery mechanism, WASP can deliver a fully mobile enterprise solution linking backend databases to employees in the field, without the need to alter existing enterprise applications.

"Our collaboration with WASP has proved very successful," says William O'Connell, Managing Director Channels Ireland, Lucent Technologies. "One of the issues of using PDAs, or even laptops, to access mobile data has been the slow connection time. Together we have reduced this connection time to ten seconds or less, making mobile data access a reality and not the hit and miss affair normally experienced."

Key to the success of the WASP and Lucent approach is in fully maximising the V110 connection protocol. Using Lucent MAX hardware, telecommunications engineers at both companies have managed to reduce the connection time from a typically painful 45 seconds to less than eight. "Getting the right start can make all the difference," says O'Connell.

Palm Pilots have advanced in popularity in recent years holding a 72% share of the worldwide personal companion market. Devices using the Palm OS accounted for 92 per cent of all handheld shipments in March, 2000, while Palm Computing has taken a 46.8 per cent share of the European handheld companion market, 17.1 per cent more than its nearest competitor.

"We choose the Palm Computing Platform as the medium of delivery of our applications due to its dominance in this market, the robustness of the core operating system, and it's strong connectivity to the mobile networks " says Donal Moran, Technical Director of WASP. "These devices are being used by managing directors across the board and have been adopted at the very highest levels. Implementing a mobile data solution using the Palm Computing Platform is therefore an easy IT decision for an organisation to make. These solutions are available now - through our alliance with Lucent we can provide them to the enterprise today."

The advantages of running a fleet of Palm Pilots over traditional laptops include lower costs, faster training and rapid deployment. For companies not wishing to increase its IT overhead, even allowing for the simplicity of implementation of a PDA network, WASP will provide a comprehensive applications delivery, renting the application software to the customer using the Application Service Provision (ASP) model. "This means not only does an organisation not have to worry about implementing and maintaining the network, it can also significantly reduce costs through leasing the service," says Moran.
